Bessie Smith, an African American vocalist, was dubbed “The Empress of the Blues.” She stood out from the competitor’s thanks to her incredible voice, dramatic flair, crystal-clear diction (you never missed a word she sang), and unmatched timing and phrasing, which appealed to jazz and blues fans alike.

Smith and her close friend Richard Morgan were traveling from a play in Memphis to Darling, Mississippi, for the performance the following day, on the morning of September 26, 1937. Their car was engaged in an accident that killed Bessie Smith close to Clarksdale, Mississippi.
